Sometimes we can sleep for weeks, months, even years, hiding under the covers. And we cling to our covers with every compulsion we can muster, all the time praying for the strength to let go, or to somehow have our covers painlessly removed. What we forget is that while it seems that we have no control over our actions, this scenario is of our own making, and our covers are imaginary.
And as artists, our imagination is our greatest ally. We just need to point it in the direction of what is beautiful, true, and eternal – our work. Show me a creative artist who is NOT creating, and I will show you unfulfilled potential, self destruction, and oh, what a waste.
The first step to awakening is becoming still. Get present, go inwards, connect with what is real, however you do it. Then go to work, FROM that place of stillness, indulging as much as possible dialogue ONLY with that place. Then surround yourself with people who are on the same path, struggling with the same demons. Remember, you CANNOT win the war, because your foe is INVINCIBLE. The compulsion to evade creative responsibility will always be with you. But you can win today, you can win this battle.
So stop reading this, turn off your phone, and no, you don’t have to check Facebook again. Just do something right now that frightens you, and that needs to be done. You are not alone, many of us are standing next to you, with you, fighting by your side.
